Pedestrian Death
In 2007, a pedestrian died in the center lane when crossing the street.
Jose Mario Gonzales, 54, of San Rafael was killed about 7:50 a.m. as he was crossing the street to work at Horizons restaurant, where he was a line cook. He was struck by a Bay Cities Refuse Service truck in front of the restaurant at 558 Bridgeway.
“I don’t know why he was standing there,” Sausalito police Capt. Don MacQuarrie said. “He could have been crossing and paused.” He said Gonzales died at the scene.
MacQuarrie said it’s not unusual for garbage trucks to use the 11-foot-wide center median during collections, although driving in the lane is not permitted other than turning into and out of driveways.
“In 2007 a pedestrian was struck and killed by a garbage truck in the two-way left turn lane while attempting to cross Bridgeway. The police captain at the time mentioned to the Marin Independent Journal that driving in the lane is not permitted other than for turning into or out of driveways.”
